Mother's Day with hula and music

My computer has finally accepted my iphone photos, after a couple of weeks of struggling with it.
Hope we don't have to go through that again.

Yesterday we went to the Hawaii Theater where Peter Apo's Mother's Day Kanikapila (musical get together)
was presented.
Friend Denise's Hula Halau was performing with him and his band at his request, so it was a very special program for us.
Also, we hadn't been to the Hawaii Theater in years.

The second floor bar and lounge area.

The interior is classical, unlike the outside of the theater.
Seats are comfortable and we had a terrific view of the stage from the first row of the balcony.

Loved the background.  The mountain scene of the banners took on different moods as the background before which they hung changed colors.
Peter Apo is a songwriter, singer, musician and a trustee of the office of Hawaiian Affairs.  He was also a former legislator.
He talked about touring the mainland during the 60's.

The red velvet dresses of the ladies were breathtaking.
Sassafras.  You have to see it to feel the sassy, rascally and cute energy of the dancers.
Elegant number with Kumu Candy dancing in the lead.

Intermission with Joe and Jay.
Great guys.

Denise, with a much needed glass of beer.

Carol, Joe's wife and hula sister of Denise's, and their teacher.

Finale with the entertainers Jerry Santos, Kuuipo Kumukahi, Del Beazley, Sistah Robi Kahakalau and Peter Apo and Kumu Candy.
Peter mentioned he wanted the Halau Na Wahine O Ka Hula Na Ka Puuwai (Women who dance from the heart) because they learn 11 hula for the right reasons.
They are "mostly grandmothes who bring a special maturity and devotion to hula...They grace the stage with great distinction and dignity."

Of course, we were hungry..Denise and Carol from dancing and we from watching so luckily we had reservations at nearby HASR.
Been here for lunch many times, but first time for dinner for R and me.  The entry patio is lit up with blue and white lights.
Our table was  indoors, but it would've been a nice night to sit outside.

R's salmon.

Denise opted for her favorite Pork Chops with carmelized onions.

The rest of us had the Surf and Turf,  steak and garlic shrimp.

The old and historic Hawaii Theater, which is still in the process of being renovated.

Chinatown at the end of a lovely Mother's Day evening.
