new toy

(Hi Princess Leia.  Your hair looks like cute Malasadas)
New toy.
Penny fought so hard to get it.  She just wanted a soft pillow.

Newtown obedience class, Penny and Pudgie, Morton's

Yesterday, Sunday, was a nice sunny day.    The view of Pearl Harbor and the big, moving radar ball was beautiful.
So was the cold azuki and fruit shaved ice at Newtown golf range after Penny's obedience class at the park, where she was her usual disobedient self.

This morning's confrontation .  Too close for comfort.  Pudgie holds his ground, while Penny is getting more curious about how to play with the bird (not prey, I hope).

The best thing to do is to distract her with a neat pile of toys she can attack.

The little pig lamp.
It is Morton's 35th anniversary this year.

Very satisfying dinner.  Loved the giant crispy asparagus.

Moiliili Community Summer Festival and Bon Odori

The Moiliili Summer festival and Bon Dance in its third year.

There were games and a large variety of craft and food booths.

When we arrived there were seats available, but we brought our own chairs and attached umbrellas that a friend had thoughtfully provided for us.

As it grew darker it was SRO with a very crowded dance ring.
Hawaii Baptist Academy Taiko group performed lively pieces.

Food from Guam and the Marshall Islands, among other stands, almost like a big Farmer's Market.

Il Gelato dessert!
It showered off and on, but no one seemed to care.
Besides, there was Kathy's "Teruteru Bozu" to ward off the worst rain.

Denise said to wear a Hapi jacket instead of a Yukata, which was wise, because of the rain and crowded conditions.
There was a trailer bathroom and the ground and chairs would get wet from the rain.

Denise sewed  a handy Hapi jacket bag for me to hold fans and flags , which we usually stick into our Yukata obis.
As usual, politicians were there to promote themselves for the next election.
Naginata practice earlier and a Bon Dance later.  A fun way to get my exercise.

Happy Fourth of July

                                            Penny, a patriotic pose, please.
?
I can do this.

Maybe you should ask Lassie or Rin Tin Tin.

It's been a while since we last had Fendu's scones in Manoa SC.

As we were enjoying our coffee and pastry, this cutie quietly peeked at us.  Penny was at Poi Dog since we were going to singing lessons, so a big commotion was avoided.

Passed the new parking structure at Ala Moana SC.  It should be ready before the end of the year.

We could hear the big Fourth of July Fireworks display going on at Magic Island.  All that booming didn't bother Penny.

Juice from my Magic Bullet blender.
Soo good with ginger, pineapple, frozen strawberries, carrots, kale, celery  and spinach!

Louis Zamperini died Wednesday at 97, of pneumonia.   He was honored on the USS Missouri in  March 2011 where we heard him tell his amazing life stories.

Track star and participant in the 1930's Berlin Olympics.  A flier in WW II and survivor on a life raft in the Pacific for 47 days.  A Japanese prisoner of war for 2 years.  Olympic Torch carrier in the 1998 Nagano Olympics.
An amazing man whose story is told in the the book and an upcoming movie "Unbroken".

Precious lady

One day, you look around you and realize that as you grew older, so did the people who knew you  when you were born, until very few are left.

Today I visited one of those precious few whose husband and my father had met before the War, when they were about 15,  went to the same college in Indiana, drove and worked all over during vacations and had many adventures together with their friends, before returning to Honolulu.

They continued with their adventures, taking their wives and helpless infants  over dangerous hiking trails above Manoa Falls and ocean cliffs, boating and camping.

Today, only she is left to recount these incidents, and to my happy surprise she did so in a strong voice, with humor and clarity.
She is recuperating after a hip operation and undoubtedly will bounce back to her former self in no time.

The Lobby of the Hospital Senior Center ready for the Fourth of July

The various departments of the Hospital displayed their miniature floats.

King Street brightened by Rainbow Shower Trees

Penny's mouth has finally grown enough to go around this toy from Aunty Liz and she loves it.

After Zumba this morning...

R went golfing so L and I went to the Mall.
We had the delicious crispy Mahimahi sandwich at the Pineapple Room.
Since we had no room for dessert, we went to do our shopping first then came back for the must have (said L)-Alan Wong's HaloHalo.

Tapioca, haupia, azuki, fruits.
Wickedly good.

Here comes Penny home from Poi Dogs where she was all day.
She did her happy dance, ate dinner, and is snoozing somewhere.

Frosted beer for R after a day of golf.
Used Orecchiette Rigate instead of  linguine.

Next on the menu should be a class - maybe two- of Zumba.
