Good food day

                                           Michinoku
                                With Gma, P, M, R and me.
P's favorite Hamachi no Kama, hamachi cheeks.   He orders it wherever he goes and likes it here best.

Grandma's favorite, salmon set

We took our car to Yajima's Service Station to get gas and got window washing service, like in Tokyo.  I remember the attendants used to greet and see off customers bowing, like in Sushi restaurants, and even guide your car out into the street.

We ended up at Chez Kenzo and chatted with Steve.
The ahi Carpaccio.

Ham (prosciutto) and cheese.   Steve laughingly wondered why the hole in the plate (other than making it look like a palette).

Tried the pork chop salad instead of the shabu salad.  Both are great.  (This had pesto dressing)
Then picked up Penny at Aloha Dog.

Paesano

Left Penny to play at Pets in the City and got things together to donate to Goodwill.  That done, we  headed to Paesano and lunch.  With good intentions we were going to order the salmon salad, but changed to the special, salmon linguine.  What's a few hundred more calories, right?

 Paesano's fresh red roses.

Cleaning, a couple of trips to Goodwill, and a 7 a.m. Zumba class with Yanos this morning, are great appetite builders.

We had to get Fendu's dark chocolate brownie for dessert later.

After a light supper of tomato soup and cheese toast we took
                                       Penny for a walk.

David's Melodians

Yesterday's Uta Matsuri's band was live and big.  It was a treat to hear live music and such great singing and the sounds are still playing in my head.
This photo is of R's dad and his band, David's Melodians, that he had started before going into business,  and which played for Hilo High dances, among other places.  He's the very youthful conductor (over 70 years ago)

Graffiti, Uta Matsuri XVII

Drove by this building and never noticed this graffiti before!

Passed by again later and could hardly see it because cars were parked in front.

The 2014 Uta Matsuri XVII
Uta Matsuri, begun in 1993, is an activity of the Pearl City High School Music Performing Arts Learning Center.   The band consists of students along with professionals and experienced musicians, from several area high schools.  They play Japanese enka music, sung by very experienced adults and students, with dancers from the Hanayagi Mitsusumi Dance Studio.

No picture taking was allowed.  We sat with Janie and Isao and after the program went to the stage to give our congratulatons to Aolani, Tevita and Craig Sensei.

Raw Dog Lucy and Penny, naginata

This morning we headed to Pearlridge SC for the Farmer's Market to visit Raw Dog's booth.   Opens at 8:30.

Raw dog food booth

Fresh fruits, flowers, vegetables
galore.

And there we saw Lucy, and her people, Glen and Faye, who had told us about it.

Lucy is so well behaved.  Unlike the little black one who barks and runs.

Thanks for introducing us to Raw Dog.  Penny's crazy about it!
See you at naginata practice this afternoon, Glenn sempai.

Eggs and Things, Bali Steak and Seafood

Yesterday's sunrise was heavy with clouds and haze.

This morning's was clear.  So nice to have blue skies after a week of gray, overcast skies.
After a very satisfying dance/exercise class with Melinda at 7:30 a.m.,  Kathy, Mel and I  headed to Eggs and Things to replenish the calories we had lost.
What is usually an impossibly busy parking lot was empty!

We didn't have to wait for a table!

Of course we took this as a sign to indulge.    Also we promised Melinda to eat the (banana) pancakes with whipped cream.

In the evening we went with friends to a first time visit to Bali Steak and Seafood at the Hilton.

Casual ambience, but pricey menu.  All seatings seemed taken.

Beef Carpaccio with peppercorns which was so good.

8 oz. (also 10 oz. ) filet mignon with garlic bulb.  Very tender and tasty with butter.

The Kona coffee creme brûlée was good.

May chose the malasadas bites.

After a very satisfying dinner.

Penny sees us looking in at Pets in the City.  Time to come home.

Volcano, Perilous Pudgie

Lava flowing downhill over greenery.

Liz sent us these photos of the volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii that is constantly producing the lava which is causing such voggy conditions these past years.

Early this morning before the 7 am Zumba class, there was a frightening incident in which Penny had grabbed Pudgie in her mouth.  Luckily Pudgie was able to fly away unharmed - mainly because Penny was not biting down hard.

Pudgie survived Penny's mouth!
He is flying around as if nothing happened, but I hope he learned not to tempt Penny by flying too close to her.

A and I had a nice lunch at Jimbos and of course, we had to have dessert so we had coffee and a most delicious dark chocolate brownie at Fendu.   It's one of those where the first bite leads to the next and the next…

Aiea dog class

Exploring new territory, we drove up to Aiea's Newtown Park to see Art's Obedience School in training.  Unfortunately it was very overcast and drizzling but they were there and waiting to see if enough people showed up.

The park is big and surrounded by greenery and very nice residential areas.   There was a golf practice range and a community center too.

Driving up Kaahele St.
Kathy, a friend from naginata who has two Corgi's, and who always gives good advice about dogs, has been coming to this school for awhile.  She's in the earlier, more advanced class, so we probably won't see them.

We parked and saw people with their dogs heading towards the tent.

Enough people showed up - some puppies in raincoats-so the class commenced.
You can see the harbor on the drive back down.

Naginata practice at Myohoji

Due to scheduling conflicts, our naginata practice was held at Myohoji Temple today.  The setting was peaceful and pretty with the sound of the stream in the background.

Healthy dinner at Hidechans.
Grilled salmon over onions.

I like the very clear Soki (Sparerib) soup with lots of grated ginger and Konbu and daikon and cilantro.
