New Waikiki SC, Roy's, Foodland opening, Soybean shake,

A very relaxing and pretty shopping center just opened in Waikiki where the old International Marketplace has been ever since I can remember.
It has new to Hawaii restaurants, as well as a Roy's (called Eating House 1849)

The stores are arranged around courtyards on three (or four?) floors.

You could almost imagine you were in a resort hotel.
Many nooks to sit and chat

And little sheltered areas to relax in.
And rocking chairs.
Grassy areas to stretch out on too.
Children were wading in a little pool next to a stage.
The original Don the Beachcomber Banyan tree was kept.

We decided to try Roy's Eating House for dinner.
Before dinner service started we waited at the bar.  Here the friendly bartender mixes a Martini and Bloody Mary.
There is lanai seating and a few indoor tables by the open kitchen.  Tonight Roy himself was being interviewed and was there to oversee his kitchen.
Very casual and nice atmosphere.
The ribeye steak.
I had a very delicious grill set, with salmon, shrimp, ribs and a crab potato salad.
Shortribs.

Herringbone and Kona Grill are still being worked on.
Exciting.

Stripsteak was opened.

There were familiar names with stand alone stores of their own.

Sugarfina.  Cute candy store.

Shinola looked interesting with bicycles, leather goods,  books.

Scent

It's quite a walk to the restrooms so be sure to start early.
Pretty little waterway leads to Saks Fifth Avenue.

Nice that there are many places to rest and wait for shoppers.

Saks is pretty with the usual departments, but no cafes.

Parking is always a problem in Waikiki, but there are ample spaces - - just make sure you validate at one of the stores.

Today, wednesday, after gym, we went to the opening of Foodland at the Ala Moana SC, since it's only an 8 minute walk.

Stay away from openings, right?
There was a line that went around the corner but we were inside in no time.

Iced coffee was served while waiting, which hit the spot since I had just come from Zumba.

Couldn't see much of the store, since it was CROWDED.

There are many take home ready to eat foods , like sushi, musubi, grilled meats, desserts and salad and olive bars.

Also a bar too (maybe a wine and beer tasting one)
Too crowded and lines too long to buy anything so we went to Shirokiya and had..

a soybean and milk shake, and mochi covered with soybean paste.
They crush cooked soybeans, mix it with sugar.  The shake has the consistency of slightly melted ice cream

Highway Inn and Haute dogs

We have passed by Highway Inn constantly on Ala Moana Blvd, but this is the first time we ever stopped to eat here.
We've been missing out.
Sunday morning was crowded, but we got to sit at the bar, which was spacious.
We ordered the usual eggs, Portuguese sausage and rice, with a side of pancakes.  Yum!
The rice wasn't dry, the sausages were not greasy, eggs were perfectly done, and the pancakes looked heavy but melted in the mouth.

Next time I will try the Hawaiian poi breakfast!

From the bar we could see into the spacious and light kitchen where there were at least ten busy people working on preparing the food.
Guy Fieri, from Foodnetwork, visited this restaurant, which has been in business since 1947.  There are old photographs of the Waipahu Plantation where I guess it began business.

After breakfast we walked around to look at the other stores that were opened around the block.
Located in the Salt complex of Our Kakaako, it will soon be joined by other businesses when the area is completely developed.

Pretty new store, a botanical boutique and coffee bar.

Across the street are the new condos that are changing the look of old Kakaako.

We stopped at Hank's Haute Dogs to buy a hot dog (bratwurst with sauerkraut) for R who was at home watching Penny.

Guy Fieri stopped by here also.

Breakfast too!
