Highway Inn and Haute dogs

We have passed by Highway Inn constantly on Ala Moana Blvd, but this is the first time we ever stopped to eat here.
We've been missing out.
Sunday morning was crowded, but we got to sit at the bar, which was spacious.
We ordered the usual eggs, Portuguese sausage and rice, with a side of pancakes.  Yum!
The rice wasn't dry, the sausages were not greasy, eggs were perfectly done, and the pancakes looked heavy but melted in the mouth.

Next time I will try the Hawaiian poi breakfast!

From the bar we could see into the spacious and light kitchen where there were at least ten busy people working on preparing the food.
Guy Fieri, from Foodnetwork, visited this restaurant, which has been in business since 1947.  There are old photographs of the Waipahu Plantation where I guess it began business.

After breakfast we walked around to look at the other stores that were opened around the block.
Located in the Salt complex of Our Kakaako, it will soon be joined by other businesses when the area is completely developed.

Pretty new store, a botanical boutique and coffee bar.

Across the street are the new condos that are changing the look of old Kakaako.

We stopped at Hank's Haute Dogs to buy a hot dog (bratwurst with sauerkraut) for R who was at home watching Penny.

Guy Fieri stopped by here also.

Breakfast too!
