Old Japanese fishermen photographs at Uncles

We've been going to Uncle's for years now and one of its charms for me is the collection of old photographs of Japanese fishermen line catching their fish.

I always like to look at the thick clothing they wore.  I found out they're called "sashiko no donza" and it kept them dry and warm.  In old Japan they were made of three layers of indigo cloth sewn with white threads in sashiko patterns.

There was an exhibit at the UH Manoa Art Gallery in 2002 "Patterns and Purpose, Japanese Fishermen Coats from Awaji Island"  that I wish I had seen.

Lots of old and new photos of the sea to set the mood.

The old photo in the background shows three  Japanese fishermen on their boat.  Other photos show them line catching fish.

Of course,  we enjoy the food too.  R always ends up with the chirashi bowl.

And I like the Fish and Chips.  Actually it's panko crusted shrimp, mahimahi or opakapaka, and calamari.
